You can add several types of questions to an exam. Sometimes, you might want to give certain questions more weight in the overall test result compared to others. To achieve this, you can utilize question categories.

How do I set up question categories?

For single choice, multiple choice, range, and combination questions, you can set a category and a difficulty level for each question. Under category, you can choose between ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Competence’. This can be done when adding the question to your learning activity, or when editing the learning format in the Warehouse.

In the test settings of the exam, you can then specify the weight for each category. For instance, you could make all knowledge-based questions score as 1 point each, while competency-based questions score as 2 points each. You can set or adjust this category-based weighting per exam.

How do I utilize question categories?

You can use question categories to effectively assess knowledge and competency. For example, if you're creating a learning activity about ‘Office safety’, it's probably more important for people to know how to use a fire extinguisher, than to remember the exact amount of fire-extinguishing agent it contains.

In this case, you could classify the question about using a fire extinguisher as a competency-based question, while the other question could be considered a knowledge-based question. In the test settings, you can then specify that competency-based questions score for 2 points each and knowledge-based questions score for 1 point each.
